Designer Commentary
“I originally designed this short in 2015 with ultra running and hiking in mind. At the time, leggings with side-pockets weren’t even a thing. It was ahead of the curve in fitness fashion apparel and is still very original today in many ways.
After going through several revisions, I soon realized the outer pockets are the perfect design for cyclists that don’t want to dress into an entire kit and would rather slap on a pair of performance shorts for that casual adventure ride.
I’ve also tested them riding on rugged gravel terrains. For the seasoned cyclist, they’re great for a cycling-friendly short with no chamois or padding for times where the saddle provides enough comfort.
For the everyday commuter cyclist and e-biker… they are perfect to ride with items stashed in the side pockets. And for that occasional/new cyclist that doesn’t want to kit-up in skin tight booty-showing family-jewel-revealing bib shorts, it’s great for them too.
For running, I’ve logged plenty of long runs in them (20+ milers). You can actually run with cycling cage-sized water bottles in the side pockets if you prefer. I usually fill the bottles halfway and run with one bottle on the left side and the phone in the other pocket. The balance works nicely.
The utility function and fashionable look of the side reflective side pockets are like an upgraded version of yesterday’s utility cargo short but without all the extra fabric baggage. It’s sleeker and better suited for people that love to spend the hours outside and need something lightweight and moisture-wicking.
I also love how the shorts don’t look like a traditional running short; they come across as more casual. Something you could get away wearing with a polo shirt.
I basically wear them everyday. And while testing them I received many unbiased compliments on how cool they look from people that didn’t know I designed them.
Yes this is my gym short too, and they perform great for squats and lunges with the phone inside the side pocket. I wear them at the gym while catching up on my favorite motivational podcasts.
I can definitely see people hiking, kayaking, fishing, working construction, or gardening in these shorts. You could even swim in a lake or ocean with them too. They are very much a boardshort.
The leg openings on this short were designed to be a tad wider allowing for more range of motion. During various revisions I wanted to be able to run in them without much rubbing on the legs so we increased the leg openings. They should fit nicely for those with larger thighs. The waistband is pretty flexible in regards to your waist size, so don’t be afraid to size up or size down if you want a more tight or loose fit. Please note that the model is wearing a Size Small, the size we had on hand for the shoot. He is normally a Medium, which would have a bit more thigh room. Also note that the zipper direction is reversed on the final product, zipping back to close.
I have a feeling they will be popular for those that didn’t want to show as much leg as with our American Classic 3” All Sex Running Short launched last year.
Best of all these are an original short design that was designed and made in Los Angeles, honoring Runyon’s commitment to American-Made.
The Runyon TrailStash 5” Gravel Short represents everything Runyon stands for — that we are more than just a running company, we are the outdoor fitness company that represents American-Made and the burning desire to stay fit and be outside.”
