Our Lo-Tech Running Short for Highly Technical People
The Retro Ranger™ takes inspiration from the classic split running shorts of the 1980s and gives them a modern performance upgrade. A 4" inseam with deep 3" side splits provides an ideal balance of coverage and freedom of movement, while the lightweight performance construction moves naturally through every stride, squat and stretch. It’s our lo-tech running short for highly technical people — intentionally simple on the outside with thoughtful performance features built in.
4 Built-In-Brief Pockets
Instead of adding bulky outside cargo or zipper pockets, the Retro Ranger™ integrates four stash pockets directly into the built-in brief liner. The compartments provide secure storage options for your phone, keys, energy gels, cards and other small essentials while maintaining the clean silhouette of a classic running short. The outside U.S.-made paracord drawcord can be tightened to help secure a phone stored upright in the built-in brief pocket and minimize movement while running.
3 Reflectives Helps You Get Noticed
Three reflective details add visibility and distinctive Runyon styling in low-light conditions. A reflective Runyon emblem is positioned on the front, while two upcycled Re-Triangle™ reflective emblems on the backside are made from reflective material left over from other projects. Inspired by the triangular markings found on a running track, these details combine visibility, performance and our commitment to making better use of available materials.

Designer Commentary
“The Retro Ranger™ has become one of my go-to shorts for long and short runs, yoga and leg day at the gym. The goal was to create a modern performance short while maintaining the simplicity and freedom of movement of the classic retro running short.
I originally started with a 5" inseam and integrated zipper pockets, but after testing the design, I wasn’t convinced that bulky zipper pockets belonged on a dedicated running short. I went back to the drawing board with a shorter split-short design and began experimenting with ways to integrate storage without changing the classic silhouette.
That eventually led us to the built-in brief. We tested several pocket configurations before simplifying the design into four built-in brief compartments. This gives runners options for carrying gels, keys, cards and even a phone upright while keeping the outside of the short clean and minimal.
I was surprised by how well carrying a phone upright in the built-in brief pocket worked. I personally use one of the outer compartments with the phone lens facing outward and my shirt tucked between the phone and my skin. Tightening the outside paracord drawcord helps secure everything and minimize bounce.
That simplicity is why I like calling the Retro Ranger™ our ‘lo-tech running short for highly technical people.’ Instead of adding more hardware, we found a simpler way to add useful storage while maintaining the original retro design.
During trail testing, a fellow hiker suggested increasing the length to make the short more versatile across sexes. We ultimately settled on a 4" inseam with 3" side splits, which provides additional coverage while maintaining the range of motion that makes a classic split running short work so well.
The two reflective triangles on the backside are upcycled from reflective scraps left over from other projects. They remind me of the triangular markings on a track while adding another functional detail for low-light running.
I’m excited to offer a running short that combines classic American athletic style with the functionality I want from a modern performance short.

This is a Unisex style. XS (Men’s) is comparable to a Women's XS. S (Men’s) is a Women's S. Comparing measurements of your favorite fitting shorts will help determine which size best suits you. The Waist is the range of the elastic waistband from minimum to maximum stretch. In most cases you'll want to be in the middle of the range. Choosing the correct size depends whether you want more room in the hips, the rise or the shorts a bit longer. For those in between sizes choosing the next size up is recommended..
