The Retro Ranger™ is our “lo-tech running short for highly technical people” — a classic split running short built around simple, functional performance. The 4-inch inseam and 3-inch side slits provide unrestricted movement through every stride, squat, lunge, and workout, making these versatile unisex performance shorts ideal for road running, trail running, track workouts, gym training, strength workouts, yoga, Pilates, and everyday fitness.
4 Built-In-Brief Pockets
What sets the Retro Ranger™ apart is its innovative built-in performance brief with four integrated storage pockets. Strategically positioned around the liner, the pockets provide multiple options for carrying a phone, keys, cards, energy gels, and other small essentials without adding bulky exterior pockets to the classic running-short design.
The outside paracord drawcord can be securely fastened around the waistband to help stabilize a phone when carried upright in one of the built-in brief pockets. The result is a streamlined running short with phone storage that maintains the clean appearance and freedom of movement of a traditional retro split short.

Designer Commentary
I'm really loving the Retro Ranger™ 4" shorts. They've become one of my go-to shorts for long and short runs, yoga class, and shredding leg day at the gym.
I originally started designing a retro “dolphin” short with a 5" inseam and integrated side zipper pockets like you'll see with many gym shorts today. After testing, I was very lukewarm about zippered inside pockets, especially for dedicated runners.
Next, I revisited the short with a 3" inseam and a traditional front inside card pocket similar to older running-short designs. After loaning the sample pair to my running buddy Mike, an accomplished runner, the feedback was to move the pocket to the backside to prevent a bulge in front. That got me thinking about a better place to integrate storage: the built-in brief.
We started with three pockets — two smaller pockets on the sides and one large pocket in the middle designed to hold a phone sideways. That concept didn't test well because the phone bounced and felt too bulky. We ultimately simplified the design into four built-in brief compartments, giving runners multiple options for carrying gels, keys, cards, and a phone upright.
I'm actually surprised by how well carrying a phone upright in the back portion of the liner works. Personally, I like to store my phone upright in the outer built-in brief pocket with the lens facing outward and my shirt tucked between the phone and skin. The outside paracord drawcord helps secure the waistband and reduce phone movement while running.
I love how the simple built-in brief pockets maintain the original retro design, which is why I like calling the Retro Ranger™ the “lo-tech running short for highly technical people.”
While testing the shorts on the trails, a fellow hiker suggested increasing the length to make the design more versatile for women. Based on that feedback, we increased the inseam to 4 inches. Combined with the 3" side slits, the longer inseam provides additional coverage while maintaining the freedom of movement and classic split-short appearance of the original design.
The result is a unisex running short designed to work across different athletes, activities, and body types while maintaining the simple retro style that inspired the original concept.
The outside of the shorts is finished with two reflective triangles on the backside. The triangles are upcycled from reflective scraps left over from other projects. They remind me of the markings on a running track while also adding a functional visibility detail for running in low-light conditions.
I'm happy to release this design and offer a short that I know you'll love as much as I do.

This is a Unisex style. XS (Men’s) is comparable to a Women's XS. S (Men’s) is a Women's S. Comparing measurements of your favorite fitting shorts will help determine which size best suits you. The Waist is the range of the elastic waistband from minimum to maximum stretch. In most cases you'll want to be in the middle of the range. Choosing the correct size depends whether you want more room in the hips, the rise or the shorts a bit longer. For those in between sizes choosing the next size up is recommended..
