Introducing The Scoutster™ 5" Adventure Short
An original concept and design — the classic Scout Short, reinvented and reimagined as a performance short built for trail running, hiking, strength training, swimming, and beyond.
Dual Side Pockets
This multi-sport short features two outside stash pockets, perfectly sized for everyday essentials. Walk the town with your wallet, get pumped at the gym with a workout towel, hit the trail running with a water bottle and stash your favorite Runyon shirt when it’s that time to run shirtless.
Backside Zipper Phone Pocket
A secure back zipper pocket holds your phone, keys, gels, and more — keeping your valuables safe while you move.
Built-In Quick-Dry Brief Liner
A smooth, moisture-wicking liner brief keeps you cool whether you’re bagging peaks, kayaking the Colorado, or getting pumped at the gym.
4-Way Stretch Quick-Dry Performance Shell
Crafted from a lightweight yet durable poly/spandex blend, the outer shell moves with you and dries fast — built to perform through miles, workouts, and adventures.
U.S.-Made Military-Grade Survival Drawstring
Our signature drawstring is made from U.S. military-grade paracord, strong enough to double as a survival tool in the wild. Produced by a U.S. government contractor and sourced from a veteran-owned business, each cord is hand-finished for lasting durability.
Designer Commentary
I started working on this short in the summer of 2022. The idea was simple: create a 5” version of the Classic 3” Short with a backside zipper pocket for a phone. We could’ve taken the easy route — just add a zipper backside pocket with basic/traditional inside pockets — and had a 5” short out quickly. But that’s not why I started this adventure in design. I wanted to build something original that I loved to wear, that served a real purpose, and was thoughtfully engineered.
I’ve always felt inside pockets on men’s shorts are outdated. Just look around and you'll see guys' phones slipping out, keys dangling against inner legs when driving, wallets sagging below the bottom hem — zipper or no zipper, the design never really works. So I knew the 5” version had to have side pockets along with the backside phone pocket. Getting them right took time — I went through many revisions of angles, elastic, and widths before finally landing on a design that functioned in real life and performed on the trails.
I’ve already put hundreds, if not thousands, of miles into testing these shorts — with and without the built-in brief. We even ran them through the San Francisco Marathon. For those who prefer a shell, the liner is easier to remove as we added a contrasting brown thread on the inside of the short.
On my own runs, I usually start with a Tech Trail Hoodie on cool mornings or a Tech Trail Tank when it’s warm. A mile or two in, I’ll stash the shirt in a side pocket when it's that time to run shirtless. The pockets are built to carry more than just small items — I’ll often wrap my keys in my shirt to hold them steady, and run with a 16 oz water bottle about two-thirds full in the other pocket. That combination — phone in the back, bottle in the side, shirt tucked away — makes this short completely unique.
At the gym, the setup is just as functional: water bottle in one pocket, workout towel in the other, whether it’s squat day, core, or chest. Even the drawcord was designed with purpose — we tacked it down to keep it sturdy and secure during movement.
After 8 rounds of revisions and testing, I’m genuinely proud of how these turned out. I believe people will love them for trail runs, ocean swims, lake jumps, strength training, hiking epic summits, or just walking around town. Honestly, they’d probably make a great pickleball short too. The options are endless.
We’re excited to launch the Scoutster™ in four colors: Black Canyon (Black), Twilight Blue (Navy), Ponderosa (Olive), White Water (White), and a special limited-edition reflective version called Disco (Reflective), featuring our hand-cut upcycled reflective triangles, each individually made.
I know you’re going to love the Scoutster™ 5" Adventure Short on whatever epic journey lies ahead.
Happy Trails!

I am generally not a fan of built in liners, so may cut it out and run with separate stand alone liners as I noticed the built in one on these shorts tends to pull down the shorts.
While still early, overall I'd say these appear to be a solid short for running and likely around town as well, probably swimming too as the description outlines. If these continue to fare well, I'll likely stock up.
