The Retro Ranger™ takes inspiration from classic American running and track shorts with a streamlined design built for athletes who prefer simplicity. A 4" inseam with 3" side splits provides an ideal balance of coverage and unrestricted range of motion for running, sprinting, trail miles, strength training, CrossFit, yoga, and gym workouts. Lightweight construction and a retro split-short silhouette keep you moving without unnecessary bulk.
4 Built-In-Brief Pockets
Instead of adding bulky exterior zipper pockets, we integrated four storage pockets directly into the built-in brief liner. The compartments provide secure storage options for a phone, keys, cards, energy gels, and other small running essentials while maintaining the clean retro profile of the shorts. An outside Made in USA paracord drawcord allows the waistband to be securely tightened and can help stabilize a phone when carried upright in one of the built-in brief pockets.
3 Reflectives Helps You Get Noticed
Reflective details add visibility for early-morning and low-light training. Each pair features a reflective Runyon emblem on the front and two upcycled Re-Triangle™ reflective emblems on the backside. The reflective triangles are made from leftover reflective material from other Runyon projects, giving performance textile scraps another purpose while adding a distinctive detail to the shorts.

Designer Commentary
I'm really loving the Retro Ranger™ 4" shorts. They've become one of my go-to shorts for long and short runs, yoga class, and shredding leg day at the gym.
I originally started designing a retro "dolphin" running short with a 5" inseam and integrated side zipper pockets similar to what you'll find on many modern gym shorts. After testing them, I was lukewarm about zippered inside pockets, especially for dedicated runners. They added complexity and bulk to what I wanted to keep a simple running short.
Next, I revisited the concept with a 3" inseam and a traditional inside card pocket like you'll find on older running-short designs. After loaning the sample pair to my running buddy Mike, an accomplished runner, his feedback was to move the pocket toward the backside to eliminate the bulge in front.
That got me thinking: why not integrate the storage directly into the brief?
We initially tested three pockets — two smaller side pockets and one large center pocket designed to carry a phone horizontally. It didn't work the way I wanted. The phone bounced, felt oversized, and took away from the simplicity of the short.
So we simplified the concept into four built-in-brief compartments, giving runners different options for carrying gels, keys, cards, and even a phone upright without adding exterior pockets to the shorts.
I'm actually surprised by how well carrying the phone upright works. Personally, I like to store my phone in the outer built-in brief pocket with the lens facing outward and my shirt tucked between the phone and my skin. Tightening the outside paracord drawcord helps stabilize the phone and minimize bounce.
I love that the simple built-in brief pockets preserve the original retro design. That's why I like calling the Retro Ranger™ our "Lo-Tech Running Short for Highly Technical People."
While testing the shorts on the trails, a fellow hiker loved the design and suggested increasing the length to make the fit more versatile. We ultimately increased the inseam to 4 inches. Combined with the 3" side splits, the length provides a great balance of coverage, freedom of movement, and classic running-short style.
The outside of the shorts is finished with two reflective triangles on the backside. They're upcycled from reflective scraps left over from other Runyon projects. The triangles remind me of the markings on a track while also adding visibility for running in lower-light conditions.
I'm happy to release this design and offer a running short that I know you'll love as much as I do.

This is a Unisex style. XS (Men’s) is comparable to a Women's XS. S (Men’s) is a Women's S.Comparing measurements of your favorite fitting shorts will help determine which size best suits you. The Waist is the range of the elastic waistband from minimum to maximum stretch. In most cases you'll want to be in the middle of the range. Choosing the correct size depends whether you want more room in the hips, the rise or the shorts a bit longer.For those in between sizes choosing the next size up is recommended.
